They are viral, be it the Anaconda – Hippo video or Truth about McDonalds. All your friends are sharing and liking them, it must be something huge. Is that ?

These pages want you to like something and share it on your Facebook profile in order to actually see them. And without hesitation you do that. But what is the use of Facebook Like or Share buttons? When you like or share something you are actually recommending them to your friends. So if something prompts you to share or like something before you actually see them, no matter what it is, its some sort of SCAM. So don’t ever do what they tell.

As far as watching those videos or pictures are concerned, just google it and most probably you will find ‘em. And the Anaconda video, it isn’t that shocking.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg told ABC News that they are aware about the user demands for a Dislike button and are considering that. So is Dislike button coming to Facebook any time soon ?

Pete Cashmore of Mashable in his column on CNN writes why Facebook will never implement the Dislike button. He feels it would damage the company’s relationships with brands, businesses and web publishers because a Disike button allows users to dislike their products thus affecting its reputation. Also web publishers won’t be desperate to implement a Dislike button and accept negative feedback from the users.

Yes, there are unofficial ways to ‘dislike’ things on Facebook. But what do you think, should Facebook officially implement the ‘Dislike’ Button ?

( Reading: Zuckerberg interview on ABC (video) , Cashmore’s article on CNN )

When the idea of mass quitting Facebook came up and lots of people pledged to do so, it was sure that not many are going to do that, even those who pledged to quit. May 31st passed without much problems for Facebook.

Many said the QF day was a flop. But Tom Spring from PC World tells why it was a success. He thinks only because of the mass publicity that it received Zuckerberg finally went on to do some privacy reviews. He says from past experiences it’s clear that only these kinds of user movements can make a difference in case of Facbook and not corporate kindness.

The much awaited change is coming to Wikipedia. A new look and feel and more importantly a new editing toolbar.

The much awaited change is coming to Wikipedia. A new look and feel and more importantly a new editing toolbar.

List of Changes

Navigation: improved navigation for reading and editing pages. Now, the tabs at the top of each page more clearly define whether you are viewing the page or discussion page, and whether you are reading or editing a page.

Editing toolbar improvements: reorganized editing toolbar to make it easier to use. Now, formatting pages is simpler and more intuitive.

Link wizard: an easy-to-use tool to add links to other wiki pages as well as links to external sites.

Search improvements: improved search suggestions to get you to the page you are looking for more quickly.

Other new features: a table wizard to make creating tables easier and a find and replace feature to simplify page editing.

In the FAQ section they say

When knowledgeable people cannot participate in editing Wikipedia because they find it too confusing or difficult to edit articles, it is a serious problem that undermines the potential quality, breadth and depth of the content that we can offer to you.

It also says this is just a beginning to the set of additional changes that are still under testing phase. You can see all those changes on the prototype site. The Wikipedia Usability Initiative is coming to MediaWiki as well. That means all those who were using MediaWiki for there Wikis can also create better wikis.

Government Requests is a tool from Google that reveals what different governments across the Globe are asking them to reveal. These are categorized into two – Data Requests and Removal Requests. Data Requests include requests for information about Google users and products and Removal Requests include requests for removal of content from Google search results.

The data is based on the number of requests received between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. Brazil tops the list with 3663 data requests and 291 removal requests. India is in 4th position in Data Requests with 1061 requests and 3rd in removal requests with 142 requests.

In the FAQ section it says – “We are working on a separate tool to show you when Google services have been blocked by governments or government agencies” .

While at Harvard, Mark Zuckerberg hacked into the Harvard servers to get the photos of all the girls in order to start Facemash, a sort of “hot-or-not” site exclusive to Harvard. That eventually led to the creation of Facebook.

This is the story of Mark Zuckerberg – ‘The Accidental Billionaire’ and soon its going to be a Hollywood blockbuster – ‘The Social Network’. From the director of ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ , David Fincher, the movie is expected to be released this October.

Doesn’t that make Orkut look dirty? I will show you how you can remove those ads from Orkut pages. This trick has been there for quite some time, but now that Orkut is showing them right at top of pages, I think it would be good to remove them.

This works with Mozilla Firefox only.

Install Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox (if you haven’t)

Install the remove Orkut ads script

Why Orkut is showing ads ?

The Official Orkut blog explains that in this post as

One of the great things about social networks is their ability to supply you with information that’s relevant to you….On the Orkut team, we believe that advertisements should be no different

So the Orkut team thinks that these ads may provide additional information relevant to you.

But that might not be the only reason. There were rumors that Google might be shutting down Orkut. Running Orkut is a very expensive task for Google and they might want to earn at least some part of the expenses through these ads.

In fact they have created a micro site for advertising on Orkut that says Orkut is the best way to reach Indians online.

Social networking sites like Twitter sends you a lot of email daily and if you don’t use separate emails it might be difficult to manage your inbox. In this post I will explain how I use the Multiple inboxes feature of Gmail to over come this with the example of managing emails from Twitter.

1. Create a filter for emails from Twitter :

Go to Gmail Settings > Filters > Create a new filter

In the From text box use Twitter . Then just click Test search to find if that is really working and click Next Step >>

In the next window check the options Skip the inbox (Archive it) and Apply the label and create a new label from the drop down box. I used the label Twitter

NB: Checking the Skip the inbox option is important, otherwise you will see the email in both your actual inbox and new inbox

2. Using the Multiple inboxes feature

Multiple Inboxes is a Gmail labs feature so you have to enable that first. Goto Settings > Labs and find the Multiple Inboxes feature .enable it using the enable radio button and Save your changes.

You can add a number of inboxes. For adding a new inbox for your Twitter emails use label:Twitter in the first text box. (since I used Twitter as the label name).

You can choose the number of emails to be shown and also the position of the new inbox.

That’s it now when ever you open your Gmail you see a multiple inboxes. Filters are a power feature of Gmail.

Twitter, WordPress,Blogger,YouTube, Flickr, Hotmail and even Bing is blocked in China. Ahead of the 20th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre the Chinese government is doing everything to quiet down the social media. I don’t know how many of my Twitter friends would survive without access to Twitter here in India

It’s your life and you should have the right to choose how to live. Why on Earth would someone want to control you unnecessarily as long as you don’t cause trouble for others.

Internet giants are doing no good. According to this blog post at Digital Inspiration companies like Yahoo, Google and Microsoft co-operate wholeheartedly with the Chinese government in implementing internet censorship there. Even Google shows a separate set of search results for China.

WordPress is different That would be the good news to all those WP fans including me. Matt said a big NO to the Communist government on blocking some topics in WordPress or giving out details about WordPress users. Big Kudos to Matt and WordPress.

Thank God the Communists are losing grounds in India and their anti media activities are limited to calling the main stream media “a syndicate against the communists”.
